In addition to setting up a Google Analytics Account for all new websites we also setup a Google WebMaster Tools Account, which allows us to register an XML Sitemap.

An XML Sitemap contains details of all the public webpages that we want the search engines to crawl, index and rank. The XML Sitemap once created is uploaded and stored in the root directory of the website.

The above image shows just one of the detailed reports provided by a Google WebMaster Tools Account. In essence these reports enable the website owner or webmaster to determine the technical search engine performance of a website and to take corrective action when necessary.

Once the XML Sitemap is registered, within the website’s Google WebMaster Tools Account, Google will send out it’s robots to crawl, index and rank the webpages and continue to do so on a regular basis. This has a big impact on the speed at which a new website can be indexed and ultimately promotes better results for both indexing and ranking of webpages.

A Google registered XML Sitemap is one very important piece in the jigsaw of professional search engine optimisation.
